"The earth provides enough for everyone's needs, but not for anyone's greed." -Remembering Mahatma Gandhi's thought
Highlights From The Issue
1) Climate lens
Continuing from the last edition, Aseem Mishra, Director of the HIC Programme, examines how the late rains have affected pastoral communities. Though they have narrowed the rainfall deficit, the relief is only partial. The delay has also exposed deeper gaps in access to water, most visible in the lives of Maldhari families.
2) Ground Report
In Bhuj, summers don't just make you sweat; they follow you indoors. For years, Hansaben's home, like most in her neighbourhood, sat under a tin roof that became an oven by midday. Read her story to see how simple, affordable passive cooling technologies have changed that.
3) Humans Of Bhuj
“When women set their minds to it, they can move mountains”
Jay Anjaria writes about the journey of Fatma Ben, who has grown into a fierce community leader, defying all odds in a patriarchal society.
4) Feature Story
Arun Vachharajani, Steering Committee Member of HIC, explores how Civil Society Organisations can drive people-centred, context-specific development and help build sustainable societies.
5) Data Corner
This time, Data Corner looks into the state of the wells and lakes, the water sources of Bhuj. The numbers are alarming for an arid landscape like Bhuj, especially when it comes to the question of water self-sufficiency.
Apart from this, we have also included the Climate Explained section, which this time talks about the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE). Read our newsletter and share your thoughts and suggestions in the comments.
