Our Work

Dignity of Labour

We organize and advocate for the equity, dignity and recognition of migrant workers, sex workers and street vendors in the city.

Context

Following the 2001 earthquake, rapid industrialisation and urbanisation transformed Kutch, making Bhuj a major destination for migrant workers from neighbouring states as well as other parts of Gujarat. Drawn by construction work and other informal, daily-wage work, many families migrated to escape poverty, repay debts, or join spouses and relatives. Over time, thousands settled in the city, with second-generation children now calling Bhuj their home.

Today, over 700 families and 500 single men live in 16 informal settlements across Bhuj, often without formal housing, clean water, electricity, sanitation, or access to basic services. Many face unsafe working conditions, wage fraud, and limited access to healthcare, education, or social protection.

HIC, in line with its commitment to equity and empowerment, supports migrant workers through organising, collectivising and linkage efforts that strengthen

their ability to claim their entitlements.

Our Interventions

  • Facilitated the formation of Nirman Saathi Sangathan (NSS), a community based organisation of 400+ workers.
  • Ensure health check-ups via Urban Health Centres and Dhanvantari Rath.
  • Conduct regular camps for linkage to government social schemes.
  • Run 2 anganwadi-s offering creche services and mid-day meals to 70+ children, across 2 settlements
  • Offering legal advice and support to workers to address workplace exploitation, and payment frauds.

Our Impact

  • Mobilised over 400 people
  • Improved access to state schemes, health, sanitation, and early education.
  • Through the collective strength of the Nirman Saathi Sangathan, workers were able to have the daily wages for all workers in Bhuj increased.
  • Successfully advocated for mobile toilets and a public water tap, with Bhuj Municipality allocating funds for the same.
